News and Notes--And Christmas!

NaNoWriMo is almost over!

Hello.  Willow here.
November is almost over and with it ends NaNoWriMo.  I'm not even sure where the others are as far as word count is concerned but I think JD wrote like 95,000 words this month.  I can tell you for sure that with one day left, I've completed 48,439 so, for sure, I'll hit the 50K mark tomorrow morning.
The beginning of December is going to be spent sprucing up our backlist.  We're looking closely at covers, keywords, descriptions and updating the back matter in all of our current books.  I want to head into 2019 with a clean slate for everyone.  We're also pulling some of our series out of Kindle Unlimited and taking them to other platforms such as Kobo, Apple and Google Books.  I don't like having all of my eggs in the same basket, so to speak and when they're in KU, we have to remain exclusive to Amazon.  I'll let you know how things progress on that front.  Just wondering how many of you read or purchase books from other platforms.  That would be helpful to know so please, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Christmas!  And I've been trying to figure out what to get for my buddies here at Pinwheel.  I've come up with a few ideas and thought I'd share them with you, just in case you have some writer friends or family on your list.

A gift that anyone would love would be a coupon.  For example, a coupon stating you'll do the laundry for a week or do the grocery shopping or pick the kids up at school or something like that.  Writers hate to be taken away from their desk and little things like this can eat up the day.
Candles!  Who doesn't love scented candles and these are perfect for writers!
Cute Desk Accessories!  OMG, I love those cute and functional items on my desk that just make me smile, make me want to come into my little office and work.  Like this--
Of course, you know, all of us writer's love books so don't forget to add them to your shopping list, too.  And, if they just happen to like cozy mysteries (wink, wink), I can give you some ideas!

Scrambled: A Susan Cramer Mystery Book 1

What happens to an unhappy woman who leaves her husband only to discover that she may have just made a terrible mistake? So horrible, her choice threatens to end her very life?

Susan believes that the grass is greener on the other side. Not that her current life is bad, necessarily; it's just boring and lifeless, kind of like the old matted rug on her dining room floor. Susan thinks her marriage has just grown - well, old. Her husband, Bob, has gained tremendous weight and continues to gain, and his health suffers. She must work at a job she hates full-time to provide the little sustenance they have. He, on the other hand, works very little (because of his health) and prefers spending his days watching television or surfing the Internet. Besides, there's her problem of not getting pregnant that can't help but contribute to his unhappiness.

Can Susan continue to live her life at the hotel knowing that she might be killed herself or imprisoned for life? Will she be able to find the real murderer with the help of the eccentric Ms. Martha Boaz?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Willow here.  It's been a good year for Pinwheel Books and 2019 is going to be even better.  Before we forge ahead with that, though, we want to give our thanks to the ones who make it possible for us to do something we love.  That would be you guys.  Without your support, we'd all be working retail somewhere and miserable!

We're all knee deep in NaNoWriMo over here at Pinwheel.  I've just hit 33,000 words and I think JD has already hit her 50,00 word mark.  I'm really excited about this book, Savage Souls, as it's different from what I normally write.  To read an excerpt, click here.  I'd love to know what you think.

And don't forget that Fireside Homicide is still on sale. Cozy up with three winter mysteries while you sip your tea or hot cocoa and snuggle by the fire.

Here's an Amazon Customer Review for Egg Noggin' included in this winter collection.

"It was a good story. It had lots of twist and turns in it.  For a who done it murder mystery happening in a small county town. A very enjoyable book to curl up in a soft fuzzy blanket, in front of a crackling Fireplace on a raining day."

Savage Souls: A Howell and Graves Paranormal Investigation

Hello.  Willow here.
Okay, I couldn't wait another minute.  This is my NaNoWriMo Project for this year and it's off to a great start.  I don't have a cover yet and I'm only about 28,000 words in but I can't wait to share  the beginning of this series.  Here's an excerpt from what is currently the prologue to Book 1, Savage Souls.

Sam Albertson’s eyes fluttered open.  It took him a moment to orient himself in the dark room and he scanned it slowly.  The shadows of the furniture, even the black rectangle of the bathroom door seemed to be right where they should be.
Struggling to remember, he thought he’d heard the door open and close.  Maybe it had been a dream.  The shaft of light falling across the foot of his bed. Did that happen or was it part of his dream? He though he heard someone say his name.
“Sam.”
Yes, there it was again.  Barely a whisper.
With difficulty, the elderly man managed to prop himself up on one elbow and turn toward the door.  He fumbled for his glasses with his free hand but they weren’t where he thought he had left them. “Hello.  Who’s there?” he croaked, cleared his scratchy throat and asked again.
“Sam, it’s me.”
The voice seemed to come from behind him and in front of him at the same time.  He couldn’t tell if it belonged to a man or a woman but he could hear the words clearly, almost as if they were spoken inside of his head.
“Me?  Who?” Sam demanded, managing to sit up straight and swing his legs over the side of the bed.  His back hurt.  His hip hurt.  Maybe he should ring for the nurse.  He was beginning to feel that whoever had entered his room might not be there to help him at all.  “Nurse Graves?  Nurse Stinson?”
A little chuckle.  “Guess again.”
“Who are you?” Sam asked, growing agitated.  He scanned the dark room for signs of movement or even a silhouette that he could make out in the darkness.
“Surely you knew I’d be here sooner or later.”
Ominous statements that Sam’s sleep addled brain couldn’t seem to piece together.  And he was still having trouble locating the intruder.
“Where are you?”
“Over here by the window.
Yes.  Sam heard that clearly and knew exactly where the voice was coming from.  The desk by the window.  He stood, knees popping and cracking and turned in that direction.  He could barely make out the white curtains framing the big rectangle and, yes, there was a shadow.  It looked like someone was sitting in his desk chair.
“I know how much you like to sit here and watch the moon come up.”  There was a short hesitation, a wet, shaking breath.  “And I know why.”
Sam froze.  He watched the moon for his own reasons. That was why he was here in the first place...
“I demand that you show yourself,” Sam commanded.
Again the quiet, unnerving chuckle. “In due time, Sammy Boy.  In due time.”
Sammy Boy?  No one had called him that since…
Indecision and pure terror washed over him.  He was a little old man again, barely able to feed himself.  “I’m ringing for the night nurse.”
Sam caught a whiff of something like wet earth, rotting vegetation and something else he couldn’t place.  And then, whoever had been in his chair was standing right beside him, holding his wrists in an iron grip.
“No need to fight it.  It’s time.”...

Okay, tell me what you think.  And can you guess what this book is about?

Author Out and About

Hello and Happy Halloween!  Willow here.  Just wanted to bring you up to date on a few things that are going on around the office this week.

We have a couple of new social media accounts.  You can find us on Pinterest as PinwheelBooks with (among others) a board called Author Out and About.  I'll be trying to post on it regularly with some candid shots of our writing world.
We're now on Instagram as @pinwheelbooks.  I try to post there at least once a day, another way to connect with our writing community.  Here are a few of the pictures I've posted in the past few days. As you can guess, early morning, coffee and journaling are part of my morning practice.

Please stop by and say hello.  Social media can be a lonely place when you're a newbie like me.
Today is Halloween, of course, but it's also NaNoWriMo eve.  We're all geared up around here for some crazy writing days during the month of November.  Jade Wolfe  swears she's going to 150,000 words this month.  She already has 3 books in a new series outlined.
I don't know if I can write that many words but I am dipping my toe into the urban fantasy realm in November with a chilling tale of murder--and werewolves.  More on that later.  I'll keep everyone updated on our word count.
I think that's about all the news for today.  I just started reading Dangerous Habits by Susan Hunter.  It's really good.  JD Salyers is reading Twilight Eyes by Dean Koontz.  He is soooooo scary good!
Hey, what is your favorite Halloween treat?

A Day In the Life

A Day in the Life of Ace Baxter is featured today over on Dru's Book Musings.  Check it out here.

Want to learn more about Ace? Then check out Southern Sisters, Book 4 in the Ace Baxter Ghost Chronicles Mystery Series. If you enjoy reading about haunted mansions and a semi-retired private investigator that just seems to attract trouble, then Southern Sisters is right up your alley.
Ace Baxter’s ghost problem is more than he can handle alone. And now, he’s managed to pick up an extra ghost – some dead dude looking for a coin. Enough is enough, so he calls in reinforcements in the form of a spiritual medium named Chris Mellon - hopefully she can help him shoo the spirit-critters out of his house. But Chris can’t even make a dent in the problem before she’s got troubles of her own – her twin sister has apparently committed suicide.
Ace, however, isn’t buying the official story. He suspects the suicide is really a murder, and he also thinks there’s something awfully fishy about the suspect list. When Chris’s fiancĂ© hires him to dig a little deeper, he jumps at the chance. He wants his medium back and his ghosts gone for good.
And that coin? Even if Ace can find it, the newest member of his ghostly family may be too smitten with ghostly specter Essie Blackthorn to cross over. . .or maybe he’ll take her with him.
